Inductors in Parallel

When inductors are connected in series, their effective inductance increases, similar to how resistors in series increase their effective resistance. To calculate the total inductance, simply add up the individual inductances. This makes it easy to determine the total inductance of a series connection of inductors.

IT = I1 + I2 +I3

We know that the voltage across an inductor is given by the equation

V = L di / dt

We can write,

vAB = LTotal x dlt / dt

VAB = LTotal x d (I1 + I2 + I3) / dt

We can further write it as

vAB = LTotal x dl1 / dt + LTotal x dl2 / dt + LTotal x dl3 / dt

That is,

vAB = LTotal ( V / L1 + V / L2 + V / L3 )

Since voltage are equal, we can simplify the equation as,

1 / LTotal = 1 / L1 + 1 / L2 + 1 / L3

You see ? that simple !!!  alrighty then .. use the calculator to the right

An inductor is a fundamental component in electrical circuits that plays a crucial role in energy storage and filtering. Its basic structure consists of a coil of insulated wire that generates a magnetic field when current flows through it. In circuits, an inductor resists changes in current and exhibits behaviors such as current ramp-up and ramp-

Types of inductors

Iron Core Inductor

Iron core inductors are the go-to choice for those seeking high power and inductance values in a compact package. While they may not be suitable for high-frequency applications, their reliability and performance make them a popular choice in audio equipment. Trust in the proven track record of iron core inductors for your next project.

Air Core Inductor

Ceramic inductors are an excellent choice when low inductance is required, as they do not have a core loss. However, due to the lack of a core, the number of turns required is higher than in inductors with a core, resulting in a high-quality factor. These inductors are commonly referred to as air-core inductors.

Iron Powder Inductor

 These inductors are made up of fine and insulating particles of pure iron powder, which allows for high magnetic flux storage due to the air gap. With a permeability below 100, they are commonly used in switching power supplies.

Ferrite Core Inductor

Ferrite materials are widely used as the core in this type of inductor. These materials are composed of XFe2O4, where X represents the transition material. Ferrites can be classified into two types:

soft ferrites and hard ferrites.

Soft ferrites can reverse their polarity without any external energy, while hard ferrites are permanent magnets that retain their polarity even when the magnetic field is removed.

Choke

Chokes are an essential component in electrical circuits, designed to block high-frequency AC while allowing DC or low-frequency signals to pass. Unlike other inductors, chokes don't require high Q factor construction techniques to reduce resistance in tuned circuits. This is because their primary function is to restrict changes in current, making them an indispensable tool for any electrical engineer.
